Back in 1967, Les Teasdale set out as an apprentice with Richard Wilkinson’s, a bodybuilder and coach painters of repute in the East Lancashire town of Billington, near Whalley, set in the beautiful Ribble Valley. As an apprentice is how he cut his teeth in this industry and by the time he left some 12 years later he had elevated himself to Foreman Painter, the business ‘Top Gun’.
The next few years after leaving Richard Wilkinson’s he helped develop the paint facility within Nova Scotia Motor Bodies in Blackburn, developing its importance as a key contributor to the business, but after 5 years he felt the time was right to become independent.
So in 1984 Hyndburn Commercials was born at a new site in Rishton, near Blackburn where he developed his new business with his wife Christine alongside then and ever since.
Right from the early days Les was an advocate of the old ICI Paint systems and today still majors on PPG DELFLEET® and Nexa Autocolor as his main brands. To enhance his reputation and to help develop more income streams, he moved to his current premises in 2011 and so he sought FleetWatch accreditation.
‘I was developing a good client base, especially in the body builder market and I was being pushed to apply for FleetWatch membership to help qualify for specification work that was becoming unattainable for me’, Les explained, ‘so I was delighted in 2011 when the investment made at our new site in Great Harwood helped me meet the audit credentials for FleetWatch.
Working today along with Les and Christine is their daughter Laura, son Simon and 8 other productives. Simon is the Workshop Manager who joined the business 12 years ago having served his Technicians apprenticeship with local Mercedes Benz dealership, Ciceley Commercials. Since arriving, and under the tutorship of Les, he has developed enviable paint application skills with Les believing he is beginning to surpass his master!
Laura is the key administrative assistant to Company Secretary Christine for the last 13 years, joining after leaving college and between them they keep the good ship sailing on course.
Today their business is still enjoying good business relationships with bodybuilders with new vehicle painting, but also for a number of local fleets and individual hauliers too. They specialise in painting, refurbishment, rebrand and de-fleet, although not structural repairs. Les advises, ‘we are not set up with jigs, wheel alignment systems etc., that isn’t our main business, however, for many clients we do undertake light accident repair.’
To enhance their sell to clients they use the FleetWatch Painspec to help underpin their quality of work and can offer the full FleetWatch warranty in conjunction with PPG Industries, another unique benefit to FleetWatch members and customers.
Congratulations to Les for reaching such a notable milestone in his working life and long may the business flourish as all the family contribute to its success.
